Abstract
Efficient construction and maintenance of underground infrastructure should be a perpetual, ongoing commitment. Design, construction, maintenance and upgrading of underground infrastructure require fresh thinking to minimize use of materials, energy and labor. This can only be achieved by understanding the performance of the infrastructure, both during its construction and throughout its design life, through monitoring. Advances in the development of innovative sensor technologies such as distributed fiber optics sensing, computer vision, micro-electro-mechanical sensors, energy harvesting and ultra-low power wireless sensor network offer intriguing possibilities that can alter the paradigms underlying existing methods of condition assessment and monitoring. In this talk, it is hypothesized that the future of infrastructure relies on smarter information; the rich information obtained from embedded sensors within infrastructure will act as a catalyst for new design, construction, operation and maintenance processes for integrated infrastructure systems linked directly with user behavior patterns. The talk will introduce several case studies of applying these technologies for monitoring the conditions of geotechnical structures and discuss how engineering decisions can made from the new sets of data. The long-term engineering performance data combined with engineering decision analysis will transform the industry to a whole-life approach - design and commissioning, the construction process, exploitation and use, and eventual de-commissioning. Ultimately the development of ‘smart’ underground infrastructure means true realization of performance based design and maintenance.
