Professor Cheung, formerly Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University and academic head of the department, was for many years, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering. Professor Cheung is an internationally renowned researcher and scholar, well known in particular, for his research activities in engineering mechanics and for his pioneering contributions to the methods of finite elements and finite strips for solving engineering problems. He has ten books and over 300 papers to his credit, and is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences. Y.K. Cheung completed his early education in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, and was awarded Ph.D. and D.Sc. degrees in the United Kingdom. He has served as Professor of Civil Engineering in Calgary, Canada and Adelaide, Australia. Over the past decade he has been appointed Honorary Professor at seventeen institutions in China and elsewhere where he has contributed to academic developments with visits for discussions and seminars. He was awarded an O.B.E. in 1995, a D.Sc. (Hon. HK) and a L.L.D. (Hon. Wales) in 2000.
