  • Prof Wei Pan’s Research Team

    Professor Wei Pan is Head of Department of Civil Engineering at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), where he is also Executive Director of Centre for Innovation in Construction and Infrastructure Development (CICID), Director of MiC Laboratory and Net Zero Laboratory. Professor Pan has a track record of HK$150 million research funding, as Principal Investigator or Project Coordinator. Also, Professor Pan is the President of the International Association for Modular Construction (IAMC), Board Director of the International Association for Automation and Robotics in Construction (IAARC), Chief Advisor of the Greater Bay Area (GBA) Smart Construction Technology Innovation Alliance, and Board Director of Hong Kong Building Technology Research Institute (BTRi).

    Professor Pan was awarded “Distinguished Young Investigator of China” by the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2019, the 2020 Honours List of the HKSAR, the “ICE Brunel Medal Highly Commended” in 2020, the “MiC Outstanding People” by Development Bureau and Construction Industry Council in 2022, and the 2025 Honours List of the HKSAR for his contribution on MiC.

    Professor Pan is specialised in sustainable construction, with research interest covering modular integrated construction (MiC), prefabrication, construction automation and robotics, sustainable infrastructure, zero carbon building, and lifecycle assessment. He has authored over 400 publications and supervised over 100 doctoral and post-graduate researchers.

    About MiCLab

    Moudular Integrated Construction Laboratory (MiCLab) is a research laboratory established at the Department of Civil Engineering of The University of Hong Kong (HKU) in 2020. It strives to achieve excellence and innovation in MiC with a desire to contribute to the advancement of the practice in Hong Kong and around the world.

    MiCLab is led by Professor Wei Pan, a global-leading scholar on modular construction, and the team includes 7 professors and over 40 researchers. MiCLab has obtained over HK$150 million research funding, published over 400 scientific papers and 10 professional guidebooks, filed over 10 patents, and received over 10 regional and international awards.

    MiC was coined in 2017 by the HKU team in collaboration with the Development Bureau of the HKSAR Government. Over the years, MiCLab has provided strategic consultancy and technical support to over 15 high-rise MiC projects.
