Gewu Building - 格物廔
Following completion of the Mingde Building in 2005, Professor Nicolas Yeung and his wife raised another funding for the construction of a dormitory building for a vocational training school in Guangxi. The dormitory building was planned to provide accommodation for 600 students who otherwise would need to travel long distances from far away villages every day. This was on a considerably larger scale than the first project.
The site was situated at the "County of Minority Miao" in Guangxi
Design of the new dormitory building in 2006
The project team came up with different design schemes for consideration
Another group of student volunteers prepared the construction drawings and attended thefoundation stone laying ceremony in 2007
Construction work on site in the summer of 2007
Final inspection of the new building
The completed dormitoryThe six-storey building was completed in July 2008 and named “Gewu Building”, after the second part of HKU’s motto, which means "pursuit of knowledge".
Quote from a student:
"When I first came for the foundation stone laying ceremony, it was a piece of flat land here. Based on the design detailed in the drawings, a new building is now standing on this piece of land. This sense of satisfaction can only belong to an engineer."
