MSc(Eng) in Civil Engineering

Up to 10 Entrance Scholarships will be awarded each year to first year part-time MSc(Eng) students of the Department of Civil Engineering with excellent academic credentials. The value of each scholarship is equivalent to 30% of the MSc(Eng) tuition fees for the curriculum.

 

Introduction

The Master of Science in Engineering (Civil Engineering) Programme is a part-time / full-time postgraduate programme providing advanced education in the field of civil engineering. The programme aims at providing in-depth theoretical and practical education for graduates aspiring to pursue professional careers in civil engineering, and for practising civil engineers to advance and update their knowledge.

The General Stream provides students with a platform to acquire multi-disciplinary knowledge in Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Infrastructure Project Management, Structural engineering and Transportation Engineering. Students are required to complete 6 discipline courses (36 credits); 2 elective courses (12 credits) and a dissertation (24 credits).

Three specialised streams of studies are also offered in Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Structural Engineering. Students are required to complete 6 discipline courses (36 credits), including 4 in their respective specialised stream of studies; 2 elective courses (12 credits) and a dissertation (24 credits).

Some courses in this curriculum are approved for reimbursement from the Continuing Education fund (CEF).

 

Admission requirements

  1. Comply with the University Entrance Requirements; and
  2. Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from The University of Hong Kong or an equivalent qualification from another comparable university or institution.
  3. Degree holders in other disciplines, such as Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environment-related Sciences, Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics will also be considered for admission.

Mode of Attendance

  • Part-time (2-3 years) / Full-time (1-2 years)
  • Lectures of most courses will usually be given on weekday evenings and on Saturdays
  • Lectures of some courses may also be given on Sundays
  • Lectures of a few courses may be given during daytime of weekdays to suit mainly full-time students

Recognition

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Institution of Structural Engineers, Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the requirements for Further Learning for a Chartered Engineer (CEng) for candidates who have already acquired a partial CEng accredited undergraduate first degree.*
