Professor Peter Lumb was a pioneer, educator and builder of geotechnical engineering in Hong Kong. His passing away in December 1998 was a big loss to the geotechnical engineering profession.Peter Lumb became a Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, The University of Hong Kong in 1954, and began his thirty-two years of distinguished academic career. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1963, Reader in 1966 and subsequently Professor of Civil Engineering in 1976. He retired from The University in 1986. To mark his contributions, the Department of Civil Engineering of The University of Hong Kong and the Geotechnical Engineering Division of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers established a distinguished lectureship known as "The Lumb Lecture". The lecture will be delivered biennially by an internationally recognized expert in geotechnics. |

The Thirteenth Lumb Lecture entitled "Measurement and modeling of creep deformation in a shale at multiple scales" will be delivered by Prof. Ronaldo I. Borja, Stanford University. The Lecture will be held at 6:30 p.m., December 2, 2025 (Tuesday) in the Rayson Huang Theatre of The University of Hong Kong. |
